said Mapy. And the weather forecast? It promised only a little rain today and even some sunshine. What no one mentioned was that the route would lead through the most stunning rocky landscapes and include a bit of climbing.

At first, it was cloudy and cool as we climbed up a pass. I had to stop again and again, marveling at the rugged mountain scenery..

We kept running into this group. They are Belgians, members of the army, and traveling here privately and they always hiked close together and did everything as a team.

After the pass it became even more sunnier!

We paused often to take in the mountain scenery. And I took far too many photos—because the clouds cast different shadows, because a certain angle looked more intriguing, because I preferred this or that view, because I wanted to capture so many memories.

On my recent hikes, I had started to feel a bit more afraid of heights. Here, there were also a few sections where the drop was quite steep and you had to do a bit of “climbing.” Luckily, I didn’t feel real fear anymore—just a bit of queasiness that I could handle. In the evening, we spoke with three people (more about them later), and one of them clearly had a strong fear of heights and really had to push her limits here. She told us that one of her motivations was reminding herself that the two older women (meaning us) had also managed to get through it. Here’s one of those climbing sections:

We continued through the large rock formations, which at times even revealed glimpses of cave entrances.

And then we descended to the lakes. Seven lakes stretch along the valley, and one of them is home to the hut.

We spent the evening with a Czech trio: mother, son, and niece, who had been a cheerful group accompanying us since the first hut. The niece was the one afraid of heights. We first managed to convince the son to play a confusing card game and later had an exciting and fun round of Ludo (which I won!).

I was starting to feel truly comfortable on this tour despite the crowded huts. Oh, and this one had its own special touch: upon arrival, we were greeted by a strong smell of weed and an empty reception area. Shortly after, the hostess appeared and instantly charmed us with her friendly, cheerful manner. It was a more modern and spacious hut – and I only noticed the sign saying one should wash only face and hands too late, as I had already stripped down at the sink. I suspect a general water shortage (at the previous hut, it was so bad that you couldn’t even refill drinking water and had to buy it in plastic bottles).
.
But what was nice: everyone had playing cards, dice, and other games – and people really did play a lot. And they talked to each other. There was no mobile connection, after all..

The food here was very, very plentiful, the coffee tastier than elsewhere, and the next day I had a loss to bear: my cap was gone! I only realized it quite late, though, since I hadn’t really needed it. After all, rain was forecast again….
