Coffee in Kozhikode

11. December 2018

Sometimes I have to learn how little I know…. But perhaps the less you know, the more open you are to being surprised?

I did not know that

  • Kozhikode used to be the largest harbour in Kerala and traded heavily with the Arabs there
  • Vasco da Gama arrived there in 1498 and the European colonial period in India began there
  • Kozhikode was the place where a large number of traders settled and today there are 39 different communities
  • the king at that time wanted trade and openness and therefore welcomed all newcomers
  • the desires of the other colonial powers were strong, which is why it was often reduced to rubble
  • it doesn’t offer any major well-known sights, but despite the destruction, history, history and even more history (they offer several heritage walks, for example)
  • there is a beach so that you can dip your feet in the sea in the evening, for example
  • the coffee is served in extremely interesting containers, at least in one restaurant, and tastes so delicious – even better than what I make at home
  • the first coffee beans are said to have been smuggled in by a Sufi in his belt when he came back from Ethiopia
