Lienz – Sun City, rainy

10. September 2025

I started out by train for my overnight stay in Lienz. I was very, very glad that I had planned it that way. It rained heavily all day. And since I really dislike hiking in the mountains when it’s raining, wandering through the town was a much better alternative. On the way there, there wasn’t really much to see either. The route runs through Austria almost all the way towards the Italian border. Normally there are great mountains to the left and right, but in the rain they hid themselves.

Lienz has about 12,000 inhabitants, belongs to East Tyrol, and promotes itself as the “Sun City.” That feels a bit strange when you’re walking through the old town and the slogan pops up everywhere—while it’s pouring rain. I didn’t really walk around that much. But then again, the pretty center isn’t all that big anyway. And I didn’t take many pictures either.

Speaking of pictures—I packed my backpack a bit differently this time. I didn’t bring my bigger camera! I wanted to see what it would be like to take only phone photos. And something else that was different compared to my previous tours: no shorts, but instead a woolly hat, gloves, and a down vest. That turned out to be a good idea. But for now, here’s my tiny picture haul from Lienz.:

When I had seen everything and had had enough of the wet weather, I went back to my accommodation. It was a little funny one—a very old house, and I had a very large room..

And then I did something I normally don’t do anymore: watched TV. While doing so, I got very tired and fell asleep, hoping for the next day to bring better weather.

I thought a bit more about what else I could say about Lienz, but nothing really came to mind. Maybe the surroundings are pretty, but I didn’t see any of that. Same goes for the rest of the town — the old part was enough for me to look around.
