Besides Mothakkara, the village of women, there is another one in Wayanad with great homestay experiences. Thrikkaipetta is all about bamboo. Bamboo is planted and then processed. This is done by the company Uravu. In addition to the shop with lots of beautiful things, you can also watch the people, mainly women, at work.
A lot is done manually, but there are also machines:.
But it’s not just the goods produced in the factory that can be seen, the village architecture of Thrikkaipetta is also made of bamboo. The bamboo villa has not only used a lot of bamboo in its construction, but also rests on pillars in a mini-lake. You have to see this gem of a house! (And as in various parts of India, the owners don’t mind if you look around the house)
This bamboo pavilion is intended for village gatherings, as a yoga space for students, dance performances, etc.
Everywhere in the village you can see bamboo-plants:
In addition to the bamboo, there is a pickle factory, an Ayurveda and yoga centre (Ayushpathy) and of course a lot of agriculture. There are a few homestays. I stayed in one where the owner was very nice etc., but her huge paintings of Jesus and Mother Theresa were a bit overwhelming.
I was only there for a short visit, but I can also recommend it for several days. Excursions to the surrounding area are also worthwhile, e.g. climbing Chembra Peak.
